The suggestions from Chris should be integrated into a quick doc fix post 4.4.6. After that, Chris' script should be integrated into bin/omero admin start in order to check locks on startup (4.4.7 etc)

Some anecdotal evidence: we're using NFSv4 for our OMERO repository (incl. FullText?) and haven't had any problems. v4 doesn't seem to require a locking daemon.
