I wonder if the request preprocessor improvements made for #10890 should commensurately expand the corresponding preprocessor integration testing.

Yes, there's certainly a need for pre-processor testing. Note: we do need to compare the current issues that are taking place on gretzky against the solution put in place by J-M and Will while we've been working on the preprocessing steps. With the MIF query, it may be that the preprocessor code is (for the moment) never accessed.
