Bug: Animating images slows UI badly

Description
In testing develop merge build 297 on adhoc-test-02, if I pop up some image viewers in Insight and press the "play" icon to animate them, then while they are running the rest of the UI becomes very sluggish to use.

You may also have a look at Agilo extensions to the ticket.
Discussed with Mark, calls using the rendering engine are not asynchronous. This implies that if the server takes too long to return the rendered image. The client becomes extremely slow
Same strategy is in place in dev_4_4, the bottleneck is the time it takes to get the plane.
We could make every call using the RE asynchronous but the underline issue will have to be fixed.
