Allow inspection of optimal reading order

Description
For min/max calculation and similar, a way to either get a generator of "blocks" or metadata for the "optimal reading order" would be useful. This should maximize use of any caching that is put in place.
NB: this may have already been created as a card/ticket, but I couldn't find it.

Moving to 5.x as I don't currently have a good handle on how best to implement this. Probably worth a discussion when we start working on 5.2.
