Rendering engine support for tiled images

Description
Once the data model permits the grouping of image tiles, it would be useful for the rendering engine to be able to render views of these tiles. This could potentially be a generalisation of the existing big image tile support, but with arbitrary transformation of each tile plus blending of overlapping tiles.
The ImageJ stitching plugin is useful for looking at one method for tile blending.
