RFE: Avoid upgrade check stack trace for off-line use

Reported by: mtbcarroll Owned by: sbesson
Priority: minor Milestone: B-F-5.2.0
Component: Bio-Formats Version: n.a.
Keywords: n.a. Cc: ux@…
Resources: n.a. Referenced By: n.a.
References: n.a. Remaining Time: n.a.
Sprint: n.a.

Description

The command-line tools seem overly keen on the upgrade check. E.g., if I am offline then the first thing I get is a large stack trace,

$ showinf -version
Failed to compare version numbers
java.net.UnknownHostException: upgrade.openmicroscopy.org.uk
	at java.net.AbstractPlainSocketImpl.connect(AbstractPlainSocketImpl.java:178) ~[na:1.7.0_101]
	at java.net.SocksSocketImpl.connect(SocksSocketImpl.java:392) ~[na:1.7.0_101]
	at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:579) ~[na:1.7.0_101]
...

and if I try to simply disable it, the help gives,

    -version: print the library version and exit
 -no-upgrade: do not perform the upgrade check

but,

$ bfconvert -version -no-upgrade
Found unknown command flag: -version; exiting.

  • Milestone set to B-F-5.2.0
  • Owner changed from mlinkert to sbesson

Should be trivial enough to fix in the bioformats-tools classes but it will likely need to wait until https://github.com/openmicroscopy/bioformats/pull/2372 is in.

Adjusted ticket to reflect outstanding problem: warning the user loudly just because they are offline.
