Thumbnail caching bugs

Will has noticed some thumbnail cache bugs when applying, copying or resetting rendering settings. This should be investigated and fixed.
Work-flow:
- Browse a dataset
- open the viewer.
- switch color model (grey scale to Color)
- Save
- Back to Data browser.
- Refresh.
- Thumbnail is still grey
- Open Viewer, image is in color

(In [6387]) Amazing what one ! will do. Test cases to cover thumbnail "update" dynamics and the dirtying of settings. Fixed a couple potential logic bugs with locations of clear() and flush(). (Fixes #2032)
