Add tests for serialization-breaking model changes

Description

Once already a change in fields or methods has caused IO exceptions in remote clients. Having a .ser file for each model that gets read in to test changes would at least notify us of breaking changes.

With experience, we now know that pretty much anything breaks (Ice) serialization.
