Refactor use of some Spring APIs for JDBC

Description

While fixing issues with TableIdGenerator, I noticed that we were not making the best use of some of Spring's JDBC functionality (like tx progragation settings). During work on #73 is probably a good time to do this in order to simplify the overall solution.
