Description
Moved from http://www.ome-xml.org/ticket/96
A somewhat objective system for rating visual quality or performance is relevant not only for users’ convenience, but also to selection and preservation in libraries or repositories of images. I have been unable to find any rating standards for microscopy images. For remote sensing, for example, the National Image Interpretability Rating Scales allows images to be rated 0-9 based partially on the visibility of particular types of structures.
Kevin heard of an plan to establish something of this kind by the American Society for Cell Biology. However, if that effort has been scrapped, be aware that there is a need for this. You might think about trying to create some, perhaps supported by a larger initiative like CODATA. There is some research towards this for medical images; I haven’t done a thorough review of the literature, but as far as I can tell, there hasn’t been a lot of headway. DICOM has some quality-related elements, but they are inadequate.
