The RenderingEngine currently does not provide a "packed integer" based retrieval mechanism which makes the ThumbImpl? and remote clients have to copy byte arrays in order to properly display and manipulate buffered images.

Implemented in r1048 as part of the renderAsPackedInt() series of changes.
