Make it easier to add application to the Bio-Formats website

Description

Right now it is a bit of a pain to add a new application to the Bio-Formats website, as one must:

  • add a new page under the "Applications" menu
  • update the table at loci.wisc.edu/bio-formats
  • update the table at loci.wisc.edu/bio-formats/applications

At a minimum, it would be nice if the two tables were somehow automatically synchronized. Even better would be to have the tables automatically generated from whichever pages are placed under the "Applications" menu, so that we do not have to manually copy and paste links around to make the table nice and alphabetized.

Is this ticket defunct now we have moved from the LOCI site? If so, can I/we close it, please? Thanks.

I'm OK with closing if adding an application now means updating a single page. If there are still multiple pages that would need updating, then maybe just change ownership.

Under the current system, you would need to create a new page for it and then add it to the toctree on the user front page. There are not two different tables anymore.

  • Cc sbesson added
  • Owner changed from crueden-x to hflynn

That's definitely an improvement. It would be very neat, though, if there was a way to annotate a new page as being an application page, and then the toctree is automatically built from all of the application-annotated pages.

Re-assigning to Helen and CC'ing Sebastien. If you guys don't think that that's feasible, then feel free to close (I won't cry, it's just a nice-to-have).

I'm not sure if that is possible or not - Sebastien?

The other thing is that it's been suggested I change the current toctree list to a table, I'm not sure whether that makes autogeneration more or less feasible.

Had a chat to Sebastien and I can organise the user sections into separate folders and then when you add a new application file in the appropriate folder, it can be automatically added to the toctree on the front page.

It does mean we need to leave the applications list as a toctree list rather than making a table but I'm happy to prioritise ease of updating over the table.

+1, though I bet we could generated a table later!

comment:8 Changed 11 years ago by hflynn

Have fixed it so that new applications will automatically be included when added to the appropriate folder.

  • Resolution set to fixed
  • Status changed from new to closed

Updating at Melissa's suggestion: latest changes to PR 269 revert the globs in favor of shorter URLs. This re-adds the step of requiring that the toctree be updated in addition to adding a new application file. This will show up as a warning during the build.
