After discussion with both Josh & Chris, I think that the best thing to do is to continue with our existing flexible install procedure which enables us to install OMERO components to wherever they are needed for each specific installation.
Therefore, closing this ticket as won't fix, for now.

Some of these suggestions make sense, and lead me to think that we should agree on a project standard for deploying to *nix so that, with our support hats on, we know where things should be and don't have to rely on knowledge that is in somebody else's head.
That said, I am in two minds over the /opt suggestion. Using /opt feels a bit old-fashioned. My understanding is that /opt used to be used for when a number of machines might mount an /opt partition containing software available to a given pool of machines whereas /usr/local is for software that is local to a specific machine. We could however use /opt as the manual/scripted Linux install, allowing us to subsequently use the /usr hierarchy once we have automated packaging options set up. That way we can differentiate between a manual install (to /opt) and an managed package install (to /usr)
Does anyone have a preference? Josh? Chris? I know that you two have both deployed OMERO in anger to *nix platforms...
With respect to the use of /home for the /OMERO binary directory, I think that if we choose to locate the OMERO.server in /opt then we should be consistent and use /var/opt for the /OMERO directory. Similarly if /usr/local then /var/local or /usr/local/var...
