Description

There are a multitude of options for alternative storage. Ideally we'd extend the existing Tables interface to minimise rewrites to client-side code.

This will include investigating whether the existing API can be modified to take advantage of more advanced HDF5 features, or to work with MongoDB, amongst other things.

In the longer term we might even have multiple storage providers behind this common interface.

I'll likely start migrating this story to the metadata board by linking to the individual tasks unless there are any objections.
