Jean-Marie pointed out ​https://pdf-renderer.dev.java.net/ which renders PDFs. It'd be possible to have a background task which would generate Thumbnails of all attached to be used as the icon in the client. (For non-PDF formats, it might even make sense to use open office to "Print to PDF" and then generate from there.)
