Transactional Boundaries and computeLocationStats()

Description
The transactional state of the rendering engine is now quite wacky due to the semi-randomness at which it writes to model objects. This is particularly noticeable to the thumbnail service which does not interact with the rendering engine via the Bean.
In particular, the following methods and their "update" requirements need to be settled upon:
computeLocationStats() resetDefaults()

Finally squashed now I think. The thumbnail service is now stateful and all changes to that affect have been made. Closing with r1067.
