Description (last modified by mtbcarroll)
A signed-JAR webstart running under Linux IcedTea 7 shows the attached dialog. Notice the "unverified" publisher, and I am not sure from the message why I would want to click 'Allow'.

We should figure out what's causing it and either fix, or close this as "wontfix". Searching briefly this would point to an "unverified certificate", but I'm not sure what would put our cert in that category on Linux.
The only other thing I can think of as being related is the fact that the https is a self-signed cert for gretzky. Perhaps we should address that to minimally reduce confusion.

Do you also see this with nightshade?
comment:5 Changed 10 years ago by mtbcarroll
Yes, exactly the same dialog from https://nightshade.openmicroscopy.org/webstart/
Also perhaps there is simply a way to prevent the attempt to create a desktop launcher.

Could be worth checking with other webstart apps, e.g. http://www.jalview.org/download (Click Launch Jalview Desktop top right)
comment:7 Changed 10 years ago by mtbcarroll
Good idea! No, no dialog like that with Jalview, launches and works fine.

http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/jweb/jcp/properties.html mentions deployment.javaws.shortcut which looks strikingly relevant.
Also, I wonder if there's some useful tweak that can be made to our
<shortcut online="false"> <desktop/> </shortcut>
in insight.jnlp. (jalview.jnlp doesn't have that element at all.)

In Paris, Damir mentioned that when somebody uses webstart, the Insight icon appears on their desktop: it is the JNLP file. (Rather more useful, he thought, would be if it were the JAR instead, but that still gets re-downloaded each time.)

The jars should be automatically cached by Java.

This is true, I should have asked Damir if he was sure it wasn't just a quick "downloading" notification he got that was actually hitting a local cache. Still, he is getting a desktop icon added anyway.

I should add that if I always click Cancel then I am asked every time I start Insight from webstart.

Exactly the same dialog seen in testing signed 5.0.2 release.
